West Oakland Roots: A Story Slam

  • Sol Gate Studios 3015 Myrtle Street Apt.10 Oakland, CA, 94608 United States (map)

West Oakland Legacy and Leadership Project (WOLLP) youth are excited to host West Oakland Roots: A Story Slam.

From Pullman Porters to Free Breakfast Programs, from a bustling jazz center to urban renewal -- we gather youth and elders from our community to celebrate West Oakland’s deep and rich cultural heritage. Join us to listen to and share stories from this community, so that we can remember what was, discuss what is, and imagine what could be.

Space is limited. Please RSVP via the Facebook event page or email, info (at) ahc-oakland.org.

WOLLP is a dynamic youth arts and environmental activism program. Throughout the year, we attend environmental conferences, learn urban farming techniques, take camping trips, and dig into our own ancestry to create a deeper relationship with the land, our artistic skills, our roots, and one another. Our program encourages youth to develop powerful and educated voices that can create positive change for themselves, their families, their communities, and the earth as a whole.

WOLLP is brought to you by Attitudinal Healing Connection (AHC). For 30 years, AHC has been a positive force in Oakland, facilitating healing circles, youth leadership programs and art programs for underprivileged youth. We hope you will help us make a difference by joining this exciting event!

What's a Story Slam?
Inspired by The Moth (themoth.org), and human tradition, a Story Slam is a community event to share stories around a theme. Storytellers (like YOU! -- if you’d like) will put their names in a hat and be chosen to tell a story at random. You can attend the slam with a prepared story, or just throw your name in when you're reminded of a story by someone else's. You also can choose to just listen to all the other stories people will be sharing.

Why?
Because storytelling makes us human, reminds us of who we are, where we come from and where we are going. West Oakland has an incredibly rich cultural history. It is important that this neighborhood is venerated for the people, movements, and the real, and sometimes hidden, histories that have made this place what it is today.

We hope to see you there!
